Seeing her Dad in the book, Emily was amazed by it. Seeing a magical book was something she thought only existed in movies and seeing it only made her fell even more like a child seeing something she’s never seen before. Emily listened to her uncle explain. “So….he left because the Queen was sick and he refused to see him die.” She frowned at first but it turned into a small smile. “Well, at least he’s okay now!” She nodded as he said he wanted to introduce her to her grandparents. “Okay sure! What are they like? Were they royals too?” 

Matthew frowned at her conclusion.  ”No that’s not why he-”  She was already distracted by the prospect of grandparents, so Matthew made a mental note to set her thoughts straight at some point.  He called to Rose and told them they were ready to leave.  Silently, she lead them towards a very homey looking lounge room.

Seated on a couch in the far corner were two adults that looked strikingly similar to Matthew and Alfred.  They rose when the party entered, the woman quickly rushing over to Emelia and pulling her into a hug.  The man was quick to follow, and he placed a hand on his grand daughter’s shoulder.

“Hello, my Dear.”  Said the woman, and she was trembling.

He nodded and stood, leaving his soda for her in case she wanted it.

“Yeah…I’ll go talk to my own nurse.”  His head was throbbing.  ”Be back soon.”  He made his way out into the hall, just as Emilys nurse came back in.  

She returned with the coffee and a sweet or two and stayed with Emelia for quite some time.  They chatted about hobbies and sports, music and everything else that came to mind.  Occasionally, the nurse ran some tests or had to go somewhere else.  She always returned though, bringing a smile and more friendly conversation.

The only person that did not return, even though the sun had gone down hours before present, was Matthew.

After some time had passed, Emily was beginning to get a bit concerned where her brother went. He had been gone a long time and he said he would come back. As the nurse came back she hoped she might know where he was. “Hey, did you see Mattie? He’s been gone a while and I wanna know where he is.”

The nurse looked confused for a moment.  

“Ah…Actually no..I have not.”  She stood up.  ”I will go look for him for you.”  She made her way into the hallway and closed the door behind her.

Emelia sat in her room alone for about three hours.

Just like Matthew, Carmen didn’t come back.

By now Emily was getting restless. The nurse hasn’t come back either and Mattie still hasn’t come back too. She didn’t want to think the worst so she decided to try to leave the room and look her brother. “Ouch.” Too bad it still hurt to move a lot.

The silence was maddening.  

Outside of her room, the faintest yellow light seemed to beckon Emelia into the hall.  

And wait..Hadn’t Carmen closed that door?  When had someone cracked it open?

Opening the door, Emily looked out to see the light and where it was coming from. Was it the nurse? Did the power go off and people were using flashlights?

The light was coming from the end of the hall, a quiet murmur in comparison to the overbearing silence that was the dark hall.  After what seemed like an eternity, a lone figure appears at the end of the hall.  It is a dark haired girl, carrying something in her arms and passing Emelias hall without so much as a glance in her direction.

Emily saw the girl and waved at her. “Hello? Can you help me? My nurse hasn’t come back in a long time!” She tried to walk towards the unknown girl, but it was still painful to walk. “Ugh!”

The girl glanced over when Emily called.  In the dim, flickering light, their eyes met for a brief moment, sending a tremor of shock down Emilys spine.  The girl held the eye contact for another few moments before suddenly breaking it and continuing on her way.

Seeing the girl walk away without a word, she tried to follow her. “Hey, sorry if you’re not a nurse but I need help!” She painfully walked and every step hurt more than the last. “Please!”

After following her for what seemed like hours, the girl stopped walking and pressed a button on the elevators panel.  It took a few moments for Emelia to notice that she had followed her inside.

The two girls stood together in silence; the dark haired girl not sparing Emelia a single glance.  In her arms was a beautifully crafted china doll in a silk dress. As the elevator descended, the dark haired girl kept her face forward.

Emily looked at the girl beside her and tried make a conversation. “That’s a really pretty doll you have. Who gave that to you?” The girl was strange. She didn’t help her or even look at her. Was she being mean? Or was taught strictly not to talk to strangers?

More silence filled the elevator.  An eternity seemed to pass between the two young women as the elevator continued to descend deeper and deeper into the depths of the hospital’s basement. 

When he silence reached the climax of insanity, the girl spoke, her gaze meeting Emily’s in the reflection of the elevator door.  “Sister.”  She said, and tapped the doll gently on the head.  “Gone now.”  Her emotionless eyes seemed to grow even colder.  “I am..Going to return it to her.”

The elevator creaked to a stop, and the doors opened up to reveal the hospital’s morgue.  She pushed a button on the elevator panel; Emily’s floor, before stepping out and away.  She did not bother to say goodbye, letting the sound of her heavy footsteps be their farewell.

The elevator doors shut.

Seeing the unknown girl leave the elevator, Emily felt very uneasy. As the elevator moved up to her floor, she hoped someone, anyone would be there. She hasn’t felt so desperate to see her older brother in a long time, and now she just wanted to hug him and tell him she was having a heart attack over him.

Once the elevator stopped at her floor, she got butterflies in her stomach. “Mattie…where are you?!” The door opened and a blinding light came from the outside of the elevator. 

“Emily?!”  Matthew nearly dropped the flashlight when he saw his sister.  ”I’ve been looking all over for you!”  He ran over to her and pulled her into his arms for a hug.  ”Where the heck did you go?!”

Emily looked at the purple drink and tasted it. “This is awesome~! I’m sure what else you have is good too!” She emptied the cup quickly but also wanted to see the rest of the place and she was.

When they passed the library, she stared in awe. It looked so grand and beautiful, she felt she could discover the secrets of the universe in there.

As they reached the red curtain, Emily thought at first she was gonna be presented to a large audience but instead saw one man stand in front of her that looked a lot like her dad.

“You’re my…uncle?” She could tell he was crying and gave him a hug. “It’s so nice meeting you, Uncle Matthew! I never thought I had an uncle or aunt until now!” Her mother had no siblings, so she never knew what it’s like to have uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces, or nephews. To say that she was just happy to see Matthew was an understatement.  

Matthew did not return the hug at first, if anything, he seemed to stiffen into a block of steel at the young woman’s touch.  He turned to give Rose a confused look.  The masked woman mouthed something along the lines of; ‘Earth culture.  Just…Go with it.’  Hesitantly, and with his body trembling, he returned her hug, eventually allowing himself to rest his chin against the top of her head.

“M-My..Brother…Your father.”  No one in Spades had known about this child.  No one had known about an Earth woman either.  Just holding his niece in his arms was enough to remind Matthew that the baby brother who had vanished years ago was more than just a hallucination.  He had been a real, living person.  And now..All that was left of him was her.  “I..I am very glad to meet you as well Lady Emelia.” 

Rose, who had decided to leave them alone to chat for a while, made a quick mirror call to another person while she waited.

“Yes..If you could locate them and bring them to the front lounge that would be wonderful.”  The other person asked her a question that had Rose frowning.  “Yes I…I do suppose we should summon my father as well..”  She said this with a heavy heart, her eyes glancing over to the two by the curtain.

Today was going to be a long day.

Emily had many questions for her uncle concerning how her Dad was as a King. “So Uncle Matthew, what kind of King was my Dad? Was he a kind and just ruler? Why did he leave here? I mean, I know he wanted to do research, but he must’ve been homesick!” She continued to bombard her Uncle with questions regarding her Dad and it was almost as if her curiosity rivaled that of a young child. 

Matthew stared at his talkative niece as she went on and on and on with her questions.  He waited patiently for her to run out of breath (it took a while) before bursting into laughter.

“You..Are..Exactly like him!”  He smiled at her properly after his own breath was caught, his eyes shimmering with fondness.  He apologized for the outburst and brought her attention to a large blue book seated on a nearby table.  Holding his hand over it, he said;  ”Show me the late King of Spades, his Highness King Alfred.”  The book began to flip it’s own pages until a picture of Emelia’s father appeared.  Alfred was dress in royal blue robes that looked just a bit too stuffy for him.  He was smiling however, and he had an arm around Matthew, who looked happy despite himself.  ”Alfred was…A happy king.  He always tried his best to help his people..The rich and the poor were equal in his mind.”  

Matthew turned to the next page, one that had a picture of another man; a blonde with serious green eyes and bushy brows.  ”He always had trouble keeping his ideas and plans organized however..He might have done more harm than good for his people if not for his Queen.”  He pointed to the man on the page.  ”Queen Arthur was always looking out for him from a young age.”  Matthew’s smile grew a little sadder.  ”Since we were children…I knew…I knew that if Al became King…Arthur would be his Queen.”  He sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose.  ”As to why he left…That is because…”  

The page flipped on it’s own, showing the King together on their inauguration day.  Alfred looked ecstatic, and though he had yet to grow into his robes and crown, he looked like he couldn’t be happier.  He had and arm around the struggling Queen, who had a worried tint to his eyes despite the anger.  ”The Queen…Became very…Very ill.  He would have died if Alfred hadn’t gone to your planet because…There is something in your plants that ours do not have.  Some sort of strong medicine.  Arthur didn’t want him to go of course, and he probably shouldn’t have but,”  

Matthew didn’t seem to notice that the page flipped once more.  This time, the image was a formal portrait of the King and Queen.  They were sitting on large, plush chairs; Arthur looked forward, with the smallest hint of a smile on his face.  Alfred however, was looking right at Arthur, with the sort of fondness only a deep friendship could create.  ”But I don’t think Al could have lived without him.”  The book closed itself before Matthew could see it.  ”Anyway, why don’t we find my parents?  They would be thrilled to meet their grand daughter.”
